On May 17, 1821, John Mullowny, the recently appointed US Representative to Morocco, arrived in Tangier to take possession of a small house in the medina, on the site of what is now the Tangier American Legation Museum, the home base of TALIM. Sultan Mulay Slimane provided the property to the United States of American to serve as the residence for their diplomatic representative, thereby placing the young nation on equal footing to the representatives of the European powers. Thus, 2021 marks the bicentennial of the Tangier American Legation as a facility fostering good relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, first for 140 years as an official diplomatic facility, then for over a dozen years as a language school and training facility for the US Department of State and the Peace Corps, and finally, since 1976, as a museum and center for cultural activities, educational programs, and research.
In celebration of the bicentennial of the Tangier American Legation and the long friendship between the United States and Morocco that it represents, this year’s annual TALIM April Seminar has the theme of “The Tangier American Legation’s First 200 years: Where We’ve Been and What Might Be Next?” Due to travel and assembly restrictions imposed to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s seminar will be virtual, held in Zoom and broadcast live on Facebook.
The Bicentennial April Seminar will take place on Zoom Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8, 13:30-17:30 in Morocco (8:30 am – 12:30 pm Eastern in the US), and will be broadcast live on TALIM’s Facebook page.
