For US Independence Day, 4 July, the Board of Directors of the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM) have issued this statement:
Black Lives Matter
The Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM) aims to promote friendship between the people of the United States of America and of Morocco, both in Morocco and the USA. Recent events in the USA—including police killings of African Americans and the disruption of peaceful protests by authorities—prompt TALIM to reaffirm our commitment to support human rights, eradicate racism, oppose state and non-state violence, recognize systemic inequality in all forms, and advocate for human rights. The Tangier American Legation is approaching its Bicentennial. TALIM represents the USA and its declared values through our cultural and educational outreach programming, selection of board members and fellows, museum exhibits, research library, and seminars. We recognize that the values we pledge to uphold, including the elimination of racism and the achievement of human rights are aspirational. They require an ongoing critical appraisal of our past and a commitment to building a better, more inclusive future.
