The First Full Day of TALIM’s 40th Anniversary Events

Today was the first full day of events held to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Tangier American Legation Museum, now the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM).  The events are being held in conjunction with the annual meetings of the TALIM Board and Fellows.  Ordinarily the meetings are held in the US, but this year they are being held in Tangier to mark this milestone anniversary.

Today’s events consisted of a tour of the new Tanger Med Port, a visit to the museum and ruins at Ksar Sghir, a visit to the Grottes d’Hercule (Cave of Hercules) and finally a social event at the home of Elena Prentice, TALIM Board Member and longtime resident of Tangier, at her charming villa.

Showcasing US Embassy Support for the Restoration of Ksar Sghir

Defenders of historical preservation in Morocco were honored to attend ceremonies last week showcasing US Embassy support to restore the archaeological site at Ksar Sghir, a fortress that was built under the Marinid Sultan Abou Youssef Yacoub in the 13th century. We urge you to visit the site and its wonderful new museum.

First Images from TALIM’s Collection of Glass Negatives Made Available on Archnet

The Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT (AKDC@MIT) has recently made available via Archnet, a first batch of scans from TALIM’s collection of glass negatives dating back to the first decades of the 20th century and depicting various locations in the Mediterranean.

The collection of approximately 2,000 images is believed to be the work of photographer Paul Ruedi, a Spanish resident of the city of Tangier between 1900 to 1930. The collection of slides features more images of Tangier than any other city, but there are also numerous photographs of locations throughout Morocco, as well as sites in Algeria, France, Spain and other parts of the Mediterranean. Des invités français, marocains, et autres se sont réunis ce mardi orageux pour commémorer le jour de l’Armistice au Consulat de France à Tanger. Des écoliers ont chanté les hymnes nationaux de la France et du Maroc, et une couronne de fleurs a été posée pour honorer ceux de Tanger – français et marocains – qui ont fait le sacrifice suprême pendant la Première et la Seconde Guerres mondiales (plus de 40.000 Marocains ont combattu pour la France pendant la Première Guerre mondiale). C’était un honneur d’être parmi les invités.

The following is a guest post by Emma Chubb, who made a presentation on her subject to a group of American, European, and Moroccan researchers and interested members of the public at TALIM on June 17.  Emma Chubb is a doctoral candidate in art history at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois USA) and is a 2013-14 American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) fellow in Morocco.

Guides and Gateways

I spent much of last fall reading through TALIM’s collection of guidebooks and tourism magazines published between the 1940s and 1970s. Perhaps it was because I too was a newcomer to Tangier, but these guides fascinated me. Some folded out like maps, mixing quirky tips for the European or American traveler to Tangier with black-and-white photographs and brightly colored illustrations.
