New images have been added to TALIM’s Glass Negatives Collection on Archnet. Currently there are approximately 250 images in the collection, currently representing a selection from five of the eighteen boxes in the full collection.  New images are added every week as they are cataloged, and scanning resumes this summer.

I am very grateful to Susan G. Miller, Beatrice St. Laurent, and the group of self-described Tangier “Old-Timers” who’ve made lists identifying the images, but there remain some images that were not identified.  In this post are two of a villa that have only been tentatively identified.

While we are continue researching this and other images to verify the locations and structures in them, we also ask your help. Can you identify this building?  If so, I’d be eager to hear form you.

Other images that are not definitively identified include these street view toward a mosque, and this one toward an arch, both most likely in northern Morocco; this scene outside a rural douar; this busy street scene, and many more.  While I have my ideas about all of these, we only assign an location once we can make the identification with a fair degree of certainty.  So if you can help, please comment on this post, send me an email, or contact us however you prefer.

We also welcome your feedback, comments and corrections on any images in the collection.

The breakdown of the images that appear online as of April 20, 2015 is:
Ruedi Images Box 1– 115 images of Tangier
Ruedi Images Box 2– 75 images of Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Gibraltar, Algiers, and Spain and other locations
Ruedi Images Box 4– 30 images of Fès, Essaouira, Rabat, Salè, Marrakech, and other places in Morocco
Ruedi Images Box 5– 17 images of Tangier and other locations on the European and African coasts of the Mediterranean
Ruedi Images Box 15– 11 images of Chefchaouen, Gibraltar, and Spain

I am working hard to enhance Archnet’s coverage of the Morocco and the Maghreb more generally.  TALIM’s glass negative collection, as well as the Paul Bowles Moroccan music recordings that will begin coming online in the next few weeks, are taking us a long way, but we continue to seek contributions of media and scholarship. Please contact us if you are interested in contributing.

I’d be particularly interested in images of the Legation throughout time, both for the Legation’s site on Archnet, and for our own web presences as we develop them in a manner that better presents our history.  2016 will mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of TALIM, originally at the Tangier American Legation Museum and the Tangier American Legation Museum Society.  Such an occasion provides us with an excellent opportunity to look back at our accomplishments!
